5 Tips for Summer Biking
Summer is officially in full swing, which means we are likely to see the temperatures start to climb here in the desert.
If you’re like the rest of us, you don’t want to stop riding your bike, and heading to the mountains all the time might not be in the budget or in your schedule. So, what are you supposed to do? Here are a few tips to keep in mind while riding at high temperatures.
Plan – when you go for a ride when it’s hot (or any time, really) be sure to let someone know when you leave and where you are going. When it is hot outside, think about routes that might have more shade and plan on riding there. Plan on avoiding the hottest parts of the day – if you want to get that ride in, sacrifice sleeping in for a little bit cooler temperature. Riding early in the day or night riding becomes very popular around here during the hottest months.
Prepare – pack all of your gear so you aren’t stuck in the elements for longer than necessary. Also, make sure you put on sunscreen and wear the appropriate clothing. You want clothing that helps you wick away sweat to keep you as dry and comfortable as possible.
Hydrate – be sure to pack more water than you think you will need. When it is really hot out, your body will need the extra fluids to keep going. Sure, those post ride beers will taste good, but make sure to pack a water bottle or some Gatorade to drink post ride too.
Snacks – your body will also be wanting to replace those electrolytes that it lost. Gatorade comes in handy, but there are also chews, bars, and all the salty foods (pretzels, peanuts, and pickles).
Summer can be an awesome time to ride your bike on Fruita trails – mostly because everyone moves to the high country to ride and we are left to our own devices. With that in mind, be safe when the temps start climbing!
