Tips to Beat the Heat

Riding at 18 road in Fruita, ColoradoWith the next few days (weeks) predicted to be in the upper 90s and 100-degree weather range, it is easy to want to stay inside where it’s cool.

If you’re anything like us though, you really need to get outside to feel more balanced. So, what are you supposed to do on these incredibly hot days?

Drink Fluids – this does not mean alcoholic beverages, we’ll get to that in a minute. Hydrate your body with lots of water! Chug that water before you head out on your bike ride, during your ride, and after. You have no idea how much water your body loses on hot days in the desert. If you’re not a fan of water, sports drinks are awesome too! They actually help you replenish some of those salts and minerals that have just evaporated off your body. Hip packs are growing in popularity as the hydration choice for bikers

Avoid Alcohol – we know, we’re being a buzzkill. But on these extreme temperature days, you want to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and drinks with high sugar content. Again, if you’re anything like us, you probably can’t avoid them or other people will suffer (hello, cranky morning gremlin!), but try to cut back on these items before you head out on a ride.

Avoid the Harsh Times – try to get out in the early morning or later at night when it’s a bit cooler. The nice thing is we’ve still got plenty of daylight, so it’s pretty sunshiney bright at 6:30 am or 8:00 pm. If early or late options are a possibility – use them!

Night Ride – this can be an extremely fun alternative to getting out of the sun. Grab some lights for your bike and see your favorite trails in a whole new light.

The Thursday Night Gravel Grind leaves from CBB at 6:15pmProtect Yourself – wear a hat when you’re not in your helmet, put on some shades, and slather on the sunscreen. All of these items will make the hot temps a little bit easier on your body.

Ride on the Shady Side – got a favorite trail that has some shade protection during the day? Stick to that route when it hits the upper 90s. If you love you the sunny spots, make sure you get a little rest in a shady spot along your ride. Trust us, you’ll need it!

Summer in Fruita can be awesome! The crowds are much smaller, and there is less chance of getting rained out of a ride (basically no chance), but it means that it’s going to be HOT! Prepare yourself by packing all the things you need and follow these tips. Remember, if you need anything, call us or stop in! We’re here to make your experience the best experience!
