Alternatives for Outdoor Cycling

For the Western Slope, the smokiness in the air from the Pine Gulch fire has made it even more challenging. If you’re finding it tougher for you to keep in bike shape, don’t worry. Here are a couple of alternatives for outdoor cycling.

Trainer – yes, we all thought we would be done with our trainers until the weather got cold, but that isn’t always the case. With programs like Zwift, you can still push yourself against some competition while pedaling inside. Also, if you own rollers, you’ll be able to maintain your bike balance and cadence until you’re able to hit the trails. swimming

Swimming – this is a low-impact exercise that works your entire body. The great thing is it can be done at any pace – from intensive cardiovascular all the way to therapeutic. The Fruita Rec Center pool is open, but you’ll need to sign up for a time slot. You can get more information about the Rec Center’s hours and information here

yogaYoga – it isn’t just about stretching those muscles out! You can also strengthen and gain flexibility with yoga. All of these are a great workout until you’re able to fully ride outside again or to keep doing while you’re riding. Our local yoga studio, Thrive, offers some great classes (in-person and virtual). There are also a ton of options on YouTube, so there is no reason not to give it a try. weight training

Weight Training – if you’ve been working up to long-distance rides, a weight training routine should have already been in your practice. If not, this is the perfect time to add it. You can hit the gym, or you can do some exercises at home to strengthen those leg muscles. Squats, one-legged bridge pose, lunges, skipping rope, and burpees can all add strength and stability to your body without even going to the gym!

While the conditions outside aren’t ideal for cycling all the time, consider alternatives for outdoor cycling to add something new to your routine. You might just find that it improves your fitness and allows you to ride longer or more difficult trails.
